Post Partum Support Via Teleconference Call
New Parents’ Support Via Teleconference Call
Although most new parents would choose to attend an in person group to discuss issues, share concerns, and compare notes pertaining to new parenthood, sometimes that isn’t possible. Timing or geographic concerns may make it impossible to regularly, or even irregularly, attend group meetings. A good alternative to gain support and develop a community is to meet other new parents over the phone.
The procedure for “attending” these meetings is similar to the way one might participate in an in-person group. Registration for the group is done via fax, e-mail or regular mail to Susan. Based on the scheduling needs of the participants a time is then set to meet. At the appointed hour, group members dial in to the group and are connected with other new parents and with Susan for a period of 1 ½ hours.
During the meetings, Susan leads and facilitates the discussion. Participants determine the topics to be discussed and typically include, although are not limited to, issues such as breast/bottle feeding, sleeping issues, finding balance, the decision to work or be at home full time, negotiating issues with extended family members, issues with spouses/partners, and the emotional roller coaster of new parenthood.
Post partum depression, an area of concern for many, is also addressed in the group discussions. Participants will be encouraged to seek treatment when indicated, and strategies for self care and nurturance will also be covered.
These group “meetings” include many of the same benefits as one might get from attending a group meeting such as reducing the feelings of isolation, connecting with others who are dealing with the same issues, exchanging information and ideas, and having the input of a trained mental health professional.
The fee for participation in the teleconference group is $15 per session. People who commit to four sessions and prepay those sessions receive a discount and pay $50 total for the four sessions. Purchasing a headset for your telephone (for as little as $10) is a good idea as it will allow you to remain on the call while having both hands free to tend to your baby as you do so.
